Top Ten Budget Destinations

I always like to compare my experiences and life’s greatest adventures to things which everyone can relate to. Being a forever wanderluster and travel seeker, the world has always seemed like a jawbreaker or an ice cream cake. With every layer you discover something completely different, either amazing, unexpected, or unparalleled.

As a graduate or budget-stricken traveler, the world can appear to be a vast place of opportunities and options yet unwavering in its limitations due to costs. Well worry no more – this idea of destination-restriction due to a less friendly wallet is no more. Travelling has become an adventure that anyone can embark on, whether they have all the money to blow or not.

Regardless of my financial situation I always seem to sway towards destinations and places that offer more for less. Think about it… why not seem more, travel farther, and gain various experiences for less – rather than spending all in one place because it was “recommended” or the easy route to take.
Feel the same way? Well, let’s get the travel minds going and throw out some greater starter locations. Here’s some incredible places to travel on a budget. Same unforgettable experience minus the impact on your bank account.

(1) Australia

Yes Australia is known as one of the more expensive destinations to travel. However, there are ways around this if you just plan properly and choose to experience the golden coast the right way: that being cheap, free, yet fun adventures and places. Melbourne is known as one of the most livable cities in Australia, even the world, to the live. In turn, there is a vast array of things to enjoy with a large majority being free:

  • Street art (sprawled across the city – explore through free tours)
  • Victoria Library (beanbag chairs, giant chess, need I say more?)
  • Penguins (you, St. Kilda pier, & penguins)
  • All-you-can-eat Hare Krishna food ($5 lunch / free dessert)
  • Yarra River pints (6-pack of beer, the sunset, and a sea of friendly travelers)

(2) Edinburgh, Ireland

The beauty that is this city is almost un-matchable compared to any other one in Ireland. Picture fairy-tale meets medieval times meets romance novel – Edinburgh is a storybook. From accommodations to cheap eats, wallet-friendly adventures to free excursions, you’ll feel like you hit the lottery. Take a look for yourself:

  • Stay: Ibis Hotel – Code Hostel – Ballantrae Hotel – High Street – Edinburgh Fringe – SmartCity Hostel
  • Food: Mimi’s Bakehouse – Jolly Ristorante – Grain Store – The Elephant House – Red Squirrel – Spoon
  • Places: Royal Botanic Gardens – Cramond Island – Arthur’s Seat – The Stand Improv – Anatomical Museum – St Giles’ Cathedral

(3) Thailand

You’ve probably heard this a million times already, but I can’t hold back from mentioning it again. Thailand needs to be placed on your travel list. The country’s reputation in the travel world is unbelievable – from its welcoming culture to unbelievable food, any wanderluster will be at peace exploring Thailand. Even greater bonus, it is crazy cheap to travel to and experience. One can not only look forward to miraculous beaches but also enjoy the budget guesthouses and hostels available to travelers. It has become a well-known fact that universally one can spend on average max $30/day in Thailand (yes I said maximum!). Meaning it is more commonly known to spend next to nothing there, all the while taking in their incredible opportunities – elephant sanctuaries, vegetarian street eats, night markets, lantern festivals, the list goes on.

(4) Bosnia & Herzegovina

The undiscovered world that is Bosnia & Herzegovina is a site for traveler’s eyes. Though not as popularly known as other destinations, I would personally name this as the hidden gem of cheap travels. Not only does this country offer a rich culture and landscape to experience, but the wide variety of experiences available is incredible.

  • Mostar landmark
  • Sarajevo street eats and artisans
  • Stari Most Bridge & Neretva Canyon
  • Rafting & kayaking on the Una & Vrbas rivers

Plus this destination offers budget-friendly places such as res rooms & cheap guesthouses, as well as free cafes & shopping quarters.

(5) Vietnam

Probably one of the most wrongly-judged countries in Europe, Vietnam has changed immensely since the war decades ago & you should start to take note of it. Limestone Karts of the North, Mekong Delta (paddy fields), Ben Thanh Market, Pho Restaurants… This list could go forever. From the cheap districts throughout the city to incredible food and accommodations – you’ll feel like a king/queen visiting here.
